Description

Junius Dalton (Dick) Shore was elected to two terms as town marshal and served in that capacity from 1908 - 1912. He also served for 32 years as a member of the Los Gatos Fire Department, 20 of those years as Chief of Hose Company No. 1. As marshal, he was known to "call down" people who ran their automobiles faster than 10 miles per hour within the town limits. "This racing in Los Gatos will have to stop!" he said. His long tenure as a firefighter dated to the all-volunteer days and the disastrous town fire of 1901. He noted that on that occasion, "the boys" were backed down one fireplug at a time from the railroad to the bridge, hampered by a lack of water pressure. "I told Dub Lyndon to run and tell his Uncle John the town's gone," he said in a 1925 interview. In addition to his civic duties, Dick Shore, son of pioneer teamster William C. Shore, was known for his ability to drive a wagon and team over steep, muddy roads in the mountains south of town, without mishap. SHD043
