OPPS123Description
Griff Tannen's (Thomas F. Wilson) "P.I.T Bull" cable flying hoverboard from Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Part II. Griff used his rocket-powered hoverboard to pull his gang through 2015 Hill Valley and over the water as they chased Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox).
This distinctive hoverboard is a rare surviving complete example featuring both lower thrusters and non-functional, edge-mounted greebles for mounting the retractable cables, which in turn were used to achieve practical SFX inserts of the board flying and pulling Griff's other gang members.
Production created both lightweight and heavier wood versions of each of the hoverboards. This hoverboard features a custom-made wooden deck painted black with red outlines; two resin rockets painted silver-color and screwed onto a wooden bar on the bottom; and two decals - one reading "P.I.T BULL" and the other of a pitbull's face - applied between fastening strip footpads on front along. The board also features a nylon foot strap and three additional straps for pulling other hoverboards, as well as plastic hoverpads on the reverse painted silver-color, white, and red with red "horns" screwed on at their tops.
Griff's "P.I.T Bull" boards are scarcer than other hoverboards made for the film, including the popular Mattel board. Following production, sympathetic repairs were made to stabilize parts of the underside of the hoverboard. It exhibits scratching from the SFX rig used to hold the cables in place, cracking in its hoverpads, chips to the wood and paint, and stains on the footpads from production use.
