Description

A production-made left hand prop for protocol droid C-3PO, portrayed by Anthony Daniels. This hand was made either for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (20th Century Fox, 1980) or Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (20th Century Fox, 1983), and then provided by Lucasfilm to the team of Disney Imagineers who were building the animatronics for the Disneyland attraction "Star Tours" in 1986. It was kept in the personal collection of one of those Imagineers, until it sold at auction through Van Eaton Galleries in 2021. This left hand is comprised of polyurethane with a split inner wrist that features holes for two snap closures, an additional pair of holes underneath, and a hole at the top side of the wrist. The hand was originally painted silver-tone with a metalized gold-tone finish, the finish has mostly deteriorated and weathered over time with only some remnants still present on the finger tips. Other wear includes completely deteriorated finish around the middle of each finger causing the resin to be visible, as well as one of the greeblies above the middle finger is not present. The palm features yellow, red, and white hand-painted lines for detailing. In the original version of the attraction that opened in 1987, a fully animatronic C-3PO robot greeted visitors in the queue line for the ride. Daniels provided the voice for C-3PO, as well as the movements based on a filmed performance of him that was then programmed into the animatronic to mimic.
