Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) Set Of 12 Model Shop-Used Printed Design Artwork Copies With Production-Era Hand-MarkingsEntry/Object ID
AWPS14Description
12 printed copies of design artworks used by the Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) model shop during the production of Irvin Kershner's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The effects team copied and distributed print-outs of artwork and details of the film's many vehicles, including those introduced during the film's opening Battle of Hoth, throughout production.
Much of the artwork in these 12 Xeroxed pages was created by miniature and optical effects unit art director Joe Johnston. The set includes one diagram for an AT-AT model miniature's attachment to a base; four diagrams depicting closeup details of the AT-AT's head and feet; four depicting an Imperial probe droid; one depicting a TIE fighter and a TIE bomber labeled "T.I.E. Boarding Craft"; one of a relative speed/maneuverability chart various space vehicles; and one particularly unique Xeroxed page featuring images of two Duros characters and ILM stop-motion animator Phil Tippet with a humorous blurb about "the Phil Tippet the public never sees" captioned "Psycho Killer on the Loose."
Several pages, including the TIE fighter copy and one featuring the probe droid, were hand-marked with numbers and doodles in graphite by production. The pages exhibit yellowing, tearing, and creasing from use and age. Dimensions: (largest) 14" x 8.5" (35.75 cm x 21.75 cm)
