Description

C-3PO's (Anthony Daniels) left hand and a set of behind-the-scenes photographs from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. C-3PO delivered the first on-screen dialogue in Star Wars: A New Hope, and is one of only a few characters to appear in all nine films of the Skywalker saga, making him one of the most memorable robots in cinema history. This hand was originally obtained by an employee of the films' producer Robert Watts. Based on concept artwork by Ralph McQuarrie and designed and created by sculptor Liz Moore, the C-3PO costume evolved throughout the films. This process included the hands, which began in Star Wars: A New Hope as separate finger covers worn over black gloves and were later upgraded to simpler one-piece cast gloves for the sequels. This rubber glove is finished in gold-tone vacuum-metalised plating, and features gold-tone-plated plastic and metal greebles affixed to the knuckles and finger joints. Different finishes were applied to various hands, with a more gold-tone likely applied to this one before it faded over time. The palm is hand-painted black with red, yellow and white wires running down the fingers to the wrist, where there is an intentional production-made split. This allowed the glove to be easily applied and secured to Daniels' hand. The lot also includes four behind-the-scenes Polaroids taken on the Dagobah System set, depicting Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Yoda (Frank Oz) and R2-D2; a large profile photograph of Hamill; and an invitation to a London screening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The reverse side of the Polaroid of Yoda and Luke is inscribed "Rehearsal Luke Should not have jacket". These Polaroids were used as storyboard photographs. All of the greeblies are present on the hand, though the finger rings are missing. The hand also exhibits silvering, cracking and wearing away of the plating due to production use and age, as well as scuffs, scratches and paint wear to the palms. The metal snap fastener at the wrist has broken off. Dimensions (hand): 24.5 cm x 15.5 cm x 7.75 cm (9.75" x 6" x 3")
