Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)/Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi: C-3Po's (Anthony Daniels) Right HandEntry/Object ID
OPPS78Description
C-3PO's (Anthony Daniels) right hand from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As the talkative protocol droid, Daniels wore mechanical-looking gloves throughout the film. It is likely that this right-hand glove was also used during the production of Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
Based on concept artwork by Ralph McQuarrie and designed and created by sculptor Liz Moore, the C-3PO costume heavily evolved throughout the films. This process included the hands, which began, in Star Wars: A New Hope, as separate finger covers worn over black gloves, and were later upgraded to simpler one-piece cast gloves for the sequels.
This glove is made of moulded flexible urethane painted silver and bronze, with a black palm, and yellow stripes down the fingers and along the palm. There is a split in the palm for putting the glove on the actor, and mechanical ridged details on the knuckles and joints. Affixed to the wrist are two metal snaps for buttoning the glove to the rest of the costume. Different finishes were applied to various hands, with this one a case of a plated-type finish that has cracked over time.
The small knuckle greeblies are present, though the larger ones are missing. The glove also exhibits signs of wear and age, including flaking paint and stiffness to the urethane, as well as discolouration where the finger rings once were. The hand comes on a custom-made acrylic display stand. Dimensions: 18 cm x 13.5 cm x 31.25 cm (7" x 5.25" x 12.25")Other Names and Numbers
