Description

Joe Chepo was a North Fork Mono Indian who is shown here on horseback. Many of the Indian Cowboys made their own equipment that was adapted from the Mexican Cowboys. Joe's neckrope and reins were called Mecate', which were made from horsehair, the mane or tail, that would be spun to make neck ropes or reins, not many ropes were made from the process. Joe's chaps were called "Woolies" because they were made from sheep's wool.
