Isaac Sweet was born in Van, Turkey and Rebecca Mosesian-Sweet was born in Bitlis, Turkey. During the period of Isaac and Rebecca's births, Armenia was suffering under oppression by the Ottamans and more than 200,000 Armenians were killed ("The Fresno Armenians" by Berge Bulbulian). To strengthen their oppression over the Armenian people, the Ottaman Turks would round up the men in the villages and murder them. When Rebecca was a young girl, Rebecca's brother, along with other men in her village, were rounded up by the Ottaman Turks. Shortly after, the men were found stripped naked and beheaded in the street and Rebecca was able to identify her brother as one of the murdered men because of a birth mark on his body. Isaac was a leader and business man, owning sawmills in Turkey. Rebecca and Isaac fled Turkey sometime before 1900 with their daughter, Grace, and their daughter Satnick was born shortly after arriving in Fresno, California. After arriving in Fresno, Isaac opened a sawmill, Sweet's Mill near Auberry, and Grace and Satnick would drive the logging trucks.Photograph Details
