Description

Standard rod engines were used by San Joaquin and Eastern Railroad between the Valley, at Friant, and Auberry, Fresno County. There were steep grades above Auberry , 5.6%, so geared locomotives, Shays and Climaxes, were used between Auberry and Big Creek. These geared locomotives would pull their respective trains up the mountain and, according to David H. Reginger in his book "The Story of Big Creek", these small geared locomotives would make "a terrible fuss".
