Jerry Dwyer and his Dog TeamEntry/Object ID
998Description
During the winter months, it was impossible to deliver supplies, mail, etc..over Kaiser Pass. With the help of Ingersoll Rand Company, Southern California Edison obtained a team of seven dogs and a driver from Alaska, Jerry Dwyer. On December 16, 1920, Jerry Dwyer and his dogs; Babe, the leader, Patsy, Dooley, Trim, Riley, Whiskey and Barney arrived. Jerry and his Alaskan Dog Team operated between Camp 60, at the upper end of Huntington Lake where it was based, and Camp 61, beyond Kaiser Pass. In his book, "The Story of Big Creek", David Redinger states that the dogs received careful attention from Jerry, who cared for them as though they were children. He even went as far as making leather shoes to protect their paws from exposure to snow. In September, 1922, Babe died and Jerry buried her on Kaiser Pass where Whiskey and Trim found their resting places subsequently. The U.S. Forest Service erected a redwood slab marking the graves where the dogs are buried. After Babe died, Patsy assumed the leadership role for the team.Photograph Details
