Women WinnowingEntry/Object ID
0129Description
Shown here are a group of women who are grinding and winnowing acorns. Shallow mortars, typically 3" or less in depth, were used for pounding acorns into acorn meal. Deeper than 3" was used for seeds (Gifford, E.W. "North Fork Mono", p. 24). After cracking the acorns, the nuts would be placed in a winnowing basket to remove small particles left on the nut. After, the nuts would then be ground in to acorn meal to be used for an acorn soup or pudding.Photograph Details
