Name/Title

Betty Gold Salt Cellars

Description

19th century decorative salt cellars with spoons that were given as a gift from the Potash family to the Lubinski family in Trochenbrod, Poland. These pieces of realia survived the war, and were given back to Betty Gold (née Potash) by her childhood playmate, Ryszard Lubinski.

Context

Betty Gold, an active Maltz Museum volunteer, docent, and survivor speaker, donated these salt cellars to the Museum in 2006, upon reuniting with her childhood friend, Ryszard Lubinski, who also survived the destruction of Trochenbrod, Poland. Gold writes in her memoir, "Beyond Trochenbrod," "The memories of Trochenbrod were joyfully revived recently at the reappearance of a close childhood friend, Ryszard Lubinski. Ryszard and his mother, Janina, the town's postmistress, were our dear friends and the only Christian family living in town. A local Cleveland Jewish newspaper received a letter from Ryszrard, who asked if any reader had information about any survivors of his home, Trochenbrod. I was witness to another Miracle! I subsequently got Ryszard's telephone number. We talked and we cried and we laughed. And a week later I flew to his Polish home to visit. Ryszard surprised me with a gift. My grandmother had given Ryszard's mother a pair of silver saltcellars long ago, and he wanted me to have them. I can't describe their value to me--the only objects I possess from Trochenbrod." --Betty Gold with Mark Hodermarsky, "Beyond Trochenbrod: The Betty Gold Story." The Kent State University Press.

Ryszard Lubinski and Betty Gold were playmates in the Trochenbrod Shtetl. Both survived the war, but each lost track of the other after liberation. When they met again decades later, Lubinski gave Gold these salt cellars, which had been a prewar gift from her family to his.
