Bagot School Bell

Name/Title

Bagot School Bell

Entry/Object ID

1963

Description

*Bell from Bagot School District, donated in 1963 to MAM. This bell was installed when the Bagot school was built in 1906. The bell had a rope attached so it was able to be rung from the ground. A story is related that Halloween Eve pranksters would climb up and untie the rope, but leaving it still hanging. On November 1, when the bell was to be rung, the rope fell down! To save on heating expenses, it was decided to lower the ceiling of the school. To accommodate this, the bell and its housing had to be removed, in 1959 or 1960. With the school officially closing in 1966, it was decided to donate the Bagot school bell to the Manitoba Agriculture Museum, and it now sits in the Homesteaders Village. (MAM records show bell donated in 1963.)
