Decorated Saddle (Cossack)Entry/Object ID
1971.111.3Description
"Cossack saddle and harness for horse which are highly decorated with bells, mirrors, religious symbols and feathers. This item is called "Hootenany" because of its unusual appearance, and because it resembles nothing seen by people before. Said to have been used by the Cossacks for ceremonial occassions. Thought to have been smuggled into Canada with settlers' effects of Doukhobors in the early 1900s and hidden in the bush during wartime, when the owner thought it unsafe to have it. It was found in damaged condition by the donor's father."Collection
