Description

Laing first saw the Pioneer at Dominion Exhibition in Winnipeg, 1904 (this date wrong), where it had extension wheels and was pulling 12 plows - 2 more than a steamer that was bogged in the mud! Pioneer interested Thos. Jackson, contractor in coal & wood, who bought it for $4860 cash. Jacksons had one section in Lilyfield. Thos. Jackson passed away in 1915, his sons had a sale in 1917 where Laing got the Pioneer and a thresher for $1000. Pioneer broke 600 acres of prairie and 50 of bush at that time, but is believed to have broken over 1800 acres in all. Pioneer threshed 43,000 bushels, 23,000 of wheat. In 1911, T. Eaton anex was dug and the Pioneer was used for threshing until 1938 when the thresher burnt. She was used to pull granaries after that.
