WOMT, Food is a Weapon, Manitowoc County's Clean Plate Club, Pledge and Promise. Sixteen children in front of a large U.S. flag on stage of the "Town Hall" meeting room at radio station WOMT, 1118 Washington Street, Manitowoc. The photograph is used as background for a "membership pledge" for the Clean Plate Club.
The "clean plate" catchphrase originated in advertising by the U.S. Food Administration during World War I and came to prominence again in 1947 when "clean plate clubs" were formed in many of the nation's elementary schools as a way to save food for "starving Europeans" under the Marshall Plan. It is interesting to note that Manitowoc County had a club as early as 1943. On the back of this photograph is stamped "Francis M. Kadow, WOMT, Manitowoc, Wis." and a penciled note "Stinker Hitler."
