Trieste II (DSV 1) was the first deep submergence vehicle (DSV) built by the U.S. Navy and the successor to the original Trieste bathyscaphe. This original design was heavily modified by the Naval Electronics Laboratory in San Diego, California. Construction was completed in 1964 at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the San Francisco Bay area.
Information gathered from operating and overhauling Trieste II helped design its replacements, the Alvin-class submersibles. The Alvins are more capable, more maneuverable, less fragile, but also cannot dive as deep as the original Trieste-class submersibles, reaching only a maximum of 20,000 feet.
