Vincent Battaglia followed in his father and grandfather's fishing tradition and become a fisherman at a very young age. He became a captain and a interpreter in San Diego onboard the bait boat the Napoli. Vincent left Roosevelt high school during the depression because fishing was a way to make a good living during this difficult time. According to Mr. Battaglia, fishermen made more then school teachers, so Mr. Battaglia did not see a reason to remain in school at this time. Being of Sicilian decent, Mr. Battaglia could speak Italian and therefore he was able to be of demand on the fishing boats, as few fishermen spook English. He was able to gain employment because his family was in the fishing business.
Throughout the interview, Mr. Battaglia discusses his father's and grandfather's fishing experiences in Alaska, and their time onboard the Star of India and the Star of Alaska. He describes the type of net his grandfather invented in Alaska to net salmon. Mr. Battaglia expresses a great amount of pride in his grandfather's fishing success. This interview is only partially transcribed, and in need of completion.Collection
