The Berkeley’s saloon deck is flooded with light that filters through leaded glass windows. These were originally crafted by the California Art Glass Studio of San Francisco, using colored glass produced by the Opalescent Glass Works of Kokomo, Indiana. Strictly speaking this is not “stained glass” but rather “opalescent glass”. This type of decorative glass is produced by a process requiring the mixing of colored oxides into the molten glass before it is poured into molds. These windows were part of the original decoration of the Berkeley in 1898. They were restored to their former splendor by Artistic Glass of San Marcos between 1995 and 1998.
