The Canadian Pacific Railway Company entered the shipping business in 1884, beginning with services on the Great Lakes. By 1887, the company was offering a service to the Orient from Vancouver. The company became a force to be reckoned with in the passenger trade, with its formidable combination of trains, passenger liners and company hotels. Passenger services continued into the 1960s, but the twin pressures of containeristaion and cheap accessible air travel forced a change of focus.
