Cunard Line’s Queen Mary and
Queen Elizabeth, mid-Atlantic
This popular advertisement features two legends, the
1936-built Queen Mary in the background passing the
1940-built Queen Elizabeth mid-Atlantic. The Queen
Elizabeth was the largest passenger ship in the world at the
time and was completed at the beginning of the Second
World War. After wartime duty as a troopship, she finally
entered service in 1946, realizing Cunard Lines’ long held
dream of a weekly two-ship express service. The Queen
Mary was retired in 1967 to become a floating hotel in
Long Beach. The Queen Elizabeth caught fire and capsized
in Hong Kong in 1972 while being converted into a floating
university and cruise ship.
