This folder consists of five items:
1. Plan of Passenger Accommodation R.M.S. Letitia: Black and white, single-page folded brochure, dated March, 1939. Deck plans for each of the six decks aboard the R.M.S. Letitia. Includes black and white photos of common areas and provides a list of authorized agents. Cunard White Star offices were listed as authorized agents for the Donaldson Atlantic line, (possibly indicating a partnership/ownership relationship with the company?)
2.Canada Scotland Direct: Color, single-page folded brochure, undated but probably ca. 1935. Provides deck plans for the sister ships Lismoria and Laurentia, both shipping vessels modified to accommodate a limited number of passengers. Brochure describes routes, one departing Montreal and arriving in Glasgow, and one departing Glasgow and arriving in Montreal. Provides color photos of common areas aboard, and line drawings of people engaged in shipboard activities. Interchangeable front/back covers featuring, on one side, an Inuit totem pole, and on the other, a Pictish cross.
3. Canada Scotland Direct: Bicolor, single-page folded poster dated Jan 14, 1954, (agent's stamp). Back features basic deck plans for the Main and Promenade Decks aboard the Lismoria and the Laurentia. Folded cover stamped "File Copy", multiple hand-written notations remark that the cruise is generally offerred three times per year and usually "is completely booked in Glasgow" before Americans have a chance to book. Another notation remarks that the Los Angeles offices of the White Star Line book Donaldson Cruises on a person-by-person basis.
4.Donaldson Atlantic Line Limited, Torpedoing of T.S.S. Athenia, List of Missing: Two legal-pages stapled, dated Oct. 18, 1939. List of the missing from the torpedoing of the T.S.S. Athenia, which was sunk off the coast of Inishtrahull, Ireland on Sept. 3, 1939, becoming the first ship sunk in WWII. Provides name, sex, age, profession, nationality and birthplace for each missing person. Form is noted as being the amended version of the same from Oct. 2, 1939.
5. Donaldson Atlantic Line Ltd. Torpedoing of T.S.S. Athenia, List of Passengers: Undated, but probably from before or around Oct. 2, 1939, multi-page, stapled list (with cardstock covers) of passengers of the Athenia who were aboard when she was torpedoed. List provides status of each passenger, (missing, survivor landed or died at sea.) Kingsbury has noted that one passenger, Alva Campbell, is missing, when the list says that she landed, a survivor, in Halifax. Most passengers were Scottish, Irish and American, but many were Polish and German. Polish and German passengers could have been fleeing the Nazi takeover of their respective countries, for respite in America. German U-Boats tracked the ship for three hours before torpedoeing it. German Commander Raeder presided over the attack, reporting to Hitler, who decided to keep the incident secret in Germany..Collection
