Gourock, New Brunswick, Canada;
by William Robertson
She was built in in 1912 and completed her maiden voyage in 1913. During peacetime, she was a passenger liner and served as an armed merchant cruiser during peacetime.
During World War 1, she was converted into a auxiliary cruiser at Hong Kong, and transported wounded men as well as medical supplies. She was again requisitioned by the British Admiralty during World War II, and on a run from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Singapore with medical supplies to aid the people against the Japanese. February 5th, 1942, the Empress of Asia was leaving Bombay on her way to Singapore when she was sunk by Japanese air bombers. Miraculously only 16 people from her crew died that day.Collection
