Manuscript extract from a diary by Juan Pantoja y Arriaga, second pilot and captain of the ship Aranzazu, of his reconnaissance along the east coast of Baja California to determine where supplies might be delivered for the maintenance of Spanish troops and missions. Includes two folding manuscript maps of the gulf coast of Baja California. The diary entries begin with the departure of Pantoja's ship from San Blas on June 22, 1786, bound for Loreto. The destination was reached in early July, and the entries become less frequent. The diary contains daily entries through July 11, recording the position of the Aranzazu, sailing directions, and other observations. About half of the text contains Pantoja's observations of the region around Loreto. The first of the maps shows a portion of the Baja California gulf coast, from north of Loreto to a point Pantoja calls "Punta de San Jose," just south of the southern tip of Isla Catalana. The coastline is rendered in detail, with the town of Loreto marked in red (including a small symbol noting the mission), and with Estero de Napolo, and other points noted. The second map is a more detailed rendering of the coastline from Puerto Escondido south to Punta de LiguiCollection
