Photo is from 1946 as she starts her maiden voyage again from New York after the war as a cruise ship.
The ship was christened by Eleanor Roosevelt on August 31, 1939. In June of 1941, the SS American was acquired by the Navy and renamed the USS West Point (AP-23). Her original carrying capacity was 2,000 passengers and crew, during the war that was increased to roughly 7,000 servicemen. That is more than what aircraft cariers of today carry.
She returned to passenger service after the war. She exchnaged hands many times and changed names many times before becoming adrift at sea in 1993. She rests today at the Fuerteventura inn the Canary Islands, all that remains is the bow.Collection
