This unassuming piece of maritime jetsam is known among the local fishing community as “Leonard’s Lucky Log.” It was deployed in tuna fishing grounds in the Eastern Pacific as an effective means of attracting tuna. The marine growth that would accumulate on the log – a prized possession among local fishermen – would act as a kind of lure for tuna. Once in the possession of local fisherman Leonard Ingrande, the log now resides at the Maritime Museum – a reminder of San Diego’s long historic connection with the commercial fishing industry.
