Scope and Content

This folder consists of seven items: 1.Compagnie Generale Transatlantique, Normandie: Undated, single folded poster page. Poster depicting a cross-section of the vessel, with printed legend. Poster bears old cello-tape and appears worn and unevenly faded, as if it hung on a wall. The legend is comprised of several printed cards which appear to have been cut from another publication and rubber-cemented onto the poster. Perhaps a master-copy for the travel agency? 2.Normandie French Line, Tourist Class Deck Plans: Multi-page stapled and folded newsprint brochure, dated April 1935. Provides photos of ammennities and crew, and "three dimensional style" deck plans for tourist class accommodations. Front page text features unusually poignant message to travelers which alludes to the ship's discerning crew's intuitve ability of how to know specifically, how to "heal" each weary, working-class traveler with either relaxation or laughter. Front cover depicts a crusader waving the vessel into port. Front cover is significantly more faded than back cover. 3.SS Normandie French Line, Cruise Plan Raymond-Whitcomb: Multi-page, stapled and folded brochure dated August 31, 1938. Printed for Raymond-Whitcomb agency, New Jersey. Provides deck plans for the Normandie and photos depicting passengers. Cover depicts the Normandie underway, print seems to have been adapted from a well-publicized aerial photo of the the vessel underway. 4.French Line Normandie- Tourist Class and Third Class: Multi-page stapled booklet. Covered in textured paper which is printed with foil. Undated, but probably ca. late 1930s. Booklet provides full-page photos of accommodations and ammennities for tourist and third clas aboard the SS Normandie. Text conveys that the Normandie provides child care, smoking rooms and a utilitarian, but comfortable, dining room for its third and tourist class passengers. 5.Facts about the Normandie: Multi-page, folded and stapled brochure dated June, 1938. Cover features full-page photo of one of the ship's bas-reliefs and features a foil strip which is also featured on each page of the booklet. Booklet provides information about the ship's extensive art, and the luxurious and fine amennities it provides. Artists whose works are installed aboard the Normandie include Lallique, who designed the dining room's chandeliers and Jean de Brunhoff, the illustrator of the children's "Babar" books, whose elephant motifs are painted in the children's salon aboard. 6. Repertoire des Collaborateurs et Fournisseurs du Paquebot "Normandie": Single cardstock page, torn from an album and folded. Undated. List of , (literally) "collaborators and furnishers", for/of the Normandie. Artists, furniture companies, vendors and design agencies employed in the decoration and outfitting of the Normandie are listed. Item is very dirty with fingerprints and is moldering. 7. "Normandie Burns at New York Pier": Life Magazine article from issue dated Feb. 23, 1942. Pictures of the Normandie at Manhattan's Pier 88, where she caught fire, capsized and finally sank, on Feb. 9, 1942. Pictures depict every stage of the ship's sinking. Backs of clipped pages feature notable articles about the destruction of Hamburg by allied forces, and the discovery of Nazi death camps in Poland.
