Scope and Content

This folder consists of four items: 1. French Line, Normandie, First Class Deck Plans: multi-page, folded and stapled brochure dated 1935. Provides deck plans for first class accommodations aboard the Normandie. Brochure is mis-folded and appears to have been for a length of time. Cover features an illustration depicting a crusader in a castle garrett waving the Normandie into port. (Item # 2 in Folder K0001.47.16 bears a different rendering of this same scene.) 2.French Line Plan, Normandie, World's Largest Ship, Third Class: Multi-page stapled and folded brochure, dated May 1938, provides deck plans and photos for/of the SS Normandie. Sample third class menu provided. As with other French Line literature, text tries to persuade tourist and third class passengers to notice the professionality and attentiveness of the crew, whereas text in brochures for "higher" classes calls attention to the luxurious appointments aboard the ship. 3.1st Class Plan- SS Normandie- World's Largest Ship- Absolutely Fire Proof: Multi-page, stapled newsprint pages, undated, ca. 1935. Provides deck plans for the vessel. Notably, the ironic declaration that the ship is "absolutely fire proof" is only made on the brochure's English-language back-cover, and not on its French, front cover. (Probably, merely to preserve type sizing.) 4. Normandie: Multi-page, letter-sized partial-color booklet. Undated but ca. late 1930s. Bound in blue velvet-flocked cardstock with a wool tassel. Provides drawings and photos of ship's accommodations and ammenities. "Showbook" for vessel.
