French officers, wives, and sailors on deck of 'Clorinde' - 1860s-1870s;
Albumen print
Five ships have born the name 'Clorinde' in the French Navy. The earliest one in 1808 and the latest in 1845. In 1856, she was transformed into a steam frigate with a retractable propeller. This photograph could possible represent the French Frigate that was finished in 1845, bearing between 40 and 46 guns. She was decommissioned in 1875, but reactivated in 1886. The Clorinde was struck from the Navy in 1888 as she was very outdated, and used as barracks in Lorient, France until 1911.Collection
