'Tusitala' of New York, loading coal at Jersey City for Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 3, 1923;
The ship was originally the 'Inverugles' (sp?), built at Greenock in 1883. Later she was named the 'Sierra Lucena' and then the 'Sophie.' She was reconditioned at Brooklyn, N.Y. and rechristened the 'Tusitala' by Joseph Conrad in memory of Robert Louis Stevenson. Tusitala is a Samoan word meaning "Teller of Tales" and is the name by which Stevenson was known to the Samoan natives.
