Scope and Content

Tuna Fishing. Mr. Spano gives a valuable account of the tuna industry from a fisherman's prospective. Mr. Spano came from an Italian immigrant family. He left Roosevelt high school to become a tuna fisherman. His valuable perspective includes the description of early San Diego during the 1930s and 1940s. He brings up a valuable point that sea food was not highly desired as it is today. He describes the caned tuna being left unguarded at the canneries, and easily stealing the tuna to eat as a young boy. From his perspective, Weight Watchers and the health food popularity of tuna brought about the beginning of the rise of the industry. Mr. Spano gives a good account of the daily work and hardship of a fisherman. He also gives a strikingly honest account of the struggle with the porpoise discussing one of his first experiences on a Purse Seiner tuna boat. He highlights the fact that the tuna boats kept getting larger and larger and more destructive. Mr. Spano acknowledges the lost of porpoise live, and also describes the ways in which tuna fisherman strived to keep the porpoise alive.
