Scope and Content

This folder consists of thirteen items: 1.Grace Line Casual Cruises to the Caribbean and South America: Single, bicolor, folded brochure dated March 1951. Brochure provides information for 16-18 day cruises aboard freighters in the Santa Series travelling from the port of New York to ports in the northeastern region of south America, including La Guaira, Puerto Cabello and Caracas. Brochure provides several black and white photos depicting shipboard life, and ports. Text indicates that the line operates cruises which are casual, require no dress codes or formalities, and are aimed at travellers who wish to relax aboard a ship accommodating few, (48) passengers. 2.Grace Line Route of Romance- California, Havana, New York via Spanish America: Color, single-folded page brochure dated 1934. Brochure provides information about 16 day cruises to ports in South America via New York, aboard the newly-launched vessels Santa Rosa, Santa Paula and Santa Elena. Photos depict passengers aboard. Text indicates that the vessels accommodate 48 passengers, and all staterooms have outside entrances. Brochure aims to convey that cruising aboard the Santa vessels is intended for those who appreciate space and privacy aboard, and who wish to undertake independent shore excursions, rather than for those who cruise, mainly, for social activities aboard. 3.Grace Line Caribbean Cruises-South America- New Santa Rosa, Santa Paula: Single page, folded color-brochure dated June 1958. Provides information for cruises to South American ports aboard sister ships Santa Rosa and Santa Paula, part of the trio of "Santa" sister-ships launched in the 1930s. Santa Rosa and Santa Paula were, presumably, remodeled to reflect newer tastes for luxury and convenience. Text of brochure reinforces the ideological shift in Grace Lines' rationale behind passengers' reasons for cruising. New text emphasizes luxury, formality and social-activities more than previous brochures, and emphasizes adventure, privacy and shore excursions less than previously. 4. Go With Grace, 13 Day Luxury Cruises to the Caribbean and South America-Santa Rosa/Santa Paula Sailing from New York every Friday, from Ft. Lauderdale every Tuesday: Single, color, folded-page dated April, 1969. Brochure provides information about 14 day Caribbean and South American cruises aboard the remodeled sister ships Santa Rosa and Santa Paula. Color photos depict shipboard and portside activities. Text and deck plans indicate that the vessels carry up to 300 passengers since their retrofit, and the line aims now, to offer a luxurious cruising experience with entertaining shore excursions. 5.S/S Santa Rosa, S/S Santa Paula- the Beautiful Sisters 1970-1971 Schedule and Rates to the West Indies and South America- 13 day Treasure-Route Cruises: Single folded-page, color brochure dated 1970. Printed after fleet had been acquired by Prudential Lines, (operating as Prudential-Grace Lines). Photos depict shipboard and ashore activities, deck plans provided. General information and itineraries provided. Emphasis placed on the fact that the line accepts credit cards for payment, (not usually noted on cruise brochures, even those from the same time period.) Text emphasizes luxury of the vessels, shipboard shopping and details a rather strict day/night/ashore dress code. Novel use of pirate imagery to sell cruises and contextualize ports of call. 6.Grace Line 196613-Day Luxury Cruises every Friday to the Caribbean and South America, Santa Rosa, Santa Paula: Single color, folded-page brochure dated Feb. 1966. Duplicate of item #4 of this folder, for the 1966 cruising season, featuring different cover. 7.Grace Lines Casual Cruises to the Caribbean and South America: Bicolor, single folded-page brochure. Duplicate of item #1 of this folder for the 1949 season. 8.Grace Line de Luxe 12-day Caribbean, South American Cruises: Single, color, folded-page brochure, dated August 1954. Provides black and white photos, deck plans, itineraries and information for 12 day Carribean cruises aboard the sister ships Santa Rosa and Santa Paula. Ships reflect remodels done in the early 1950s. Emphasis on luxury and socialization aboard. 9.Grace Line Stateroom Plan, Santa Rosa, Santa Paula, Santa Elena, Santa Lucia: Single, folded newsprint page brochure dated Nov. 1939. Provides deck plans for each of the 5 Santa ships. 10.Grace line 24-26 day Caribbean Cruises, 40-47 day Round-Trip Voyages to Chile- Santa Barbara, Santa Cecilia, Santa Elena, Santa Luisa, Santa Isabel, Santa Lucia, Santa Margarita: Single, color, folded-page brochure dated June 1966. Provides information for long "voyage" cruises to Carribean ports and Chile. 11.Grace Line Northwest Cruise, New Standards fo Speed... Luxury, Economy on the 4 new "Santa" Liners, the Finest Ships the Pacific Coastwise Service has Ever Known: Single, bicolor folded leaflet, undated but ca. early 1930s. Provides information about Pacific-coast cruises aboard the new Santa Rosa, Santa Lucia, Santa Elena and Santa Paula ships. Information about the innovative nature of the vessels says that each vessel accommodates 200 passengers, although a different, slightly later brochure says that the ships Santa Rosa, Santa Paula and Santa Elena only offer 48 passenger cabins. Possibly, ships were placed on freighter service along the east-coast route and fewer cabins were used for passenger transport? 12.Grace Line 26-Day Casual Cruises to the Caribbean and the Pacific Coast of South America, Santa Magdalena, Santa Mariana, Santa Maria, Santa Mercedes: Single, folded-page color brochure dated 1966. Provides deck plans, general information, itineraries, information about ports and shipboard life and photos of shipboard and shoreside activities. 26-day cruise departed Newark, NJ for Caribbean ports, passengers boarded a separate vessel for the Pacific portion of the cruise. 13. American Rebublics Line, Furness Prince Line, Grace Line, Chilean State Railways, Pan American-Grace Airways, "Round South America": Multi-page folded, stapled booklet dated 1939. Booklet showcasing South American cruise, airline and rail line services offered by American companies. Grace Line is featured, as well as Grace-Pan American Airline, (a subsidiary of Grace Lines?) Booklet features many, large black and white photos of ports in South America, vessels underway and passengers engaging in travel. Perhaps a joint-venture produced to stir up more/new interest in travel to South America. Item to be cross-listed for American Republics and Furness Prince Lines. Kingsbury has hand-drawn a vessel onto a picture of a port inside the booklet.
