The Greene Line was a rivergoing steamboat line founded in 1890 in Newport Ohio by Gordon C Greene. Line operated up and down the Mississippi offering pleasure and transportation cruises. Line renamed the Delta Queen Steamboat Company some time in the first quarter of the 20th c. The line's vessel S.S. Delta Queen was its most notable, as it was part of a federal suit in 1970 wherein the US Coast Guard deemed the vessel unsafe and unable to carry passengers as a result of its lack of fireproofing. The companies' resistance to fireproofing the historic vessel created an unprecidented federal case regarding the preservation of working vessels in their original, "unimproved" states. The vessel became a point of national interest when a massive letter-writing campaign to then President Richard Nixon, was started after several musicians, including Johnny Cash, (who wrote a song about the situation and spoke about it on his television show,)called for pressure to preserve the vessel in its original state as a part of American living history.Collection
