Hair Plume from HeaddressEntry/Object ID
1983.079.001Description
-brush from Tahiti made from tufts of yellow strands of hair
-hair is bundled in brown fiber and woven at base
Notes: This plume of bleached hair would have been worn with a headdress. Bleaching was done by using a lime plaster in the hair during the day, so that the combination of sunlight and lime mixture would gradually lighten dark hair to a reddish to yellowish color. Other materials in the headdress might include feathers, pandanus plant leaves, barkcloth, and shell.Collection
