Scope and Content

This folder consists of five items: 1.Hamburg American Line Triple Screw Mail Steamer "Reliance": Single, folded chart-sized page dated 1929. Provides deck plans for the SS Reliance. Old HAPAG logo featured on cover. Kingsbury has hand notated "first class" on cover. 2. Hambury American Line Triple Screw Mail Steamer Reliance Third Class: Duplicate of item #1 of this folder, but dated to 1927. Features more stylized HAPAG logo, although document is older than item #1. 3.The Hamburg-American Liner "Reliance" Cruise Plan: Single, folded chart-sized page dated Oct. 1935. Provides deck plans for the Reliance. Features photo of ship underway, and a watermark image photo of the ship underway depicted from a 3/4 profile. 4.Northern Wonderlands- Russia-De Luxe Cruise From New York June 28, 1935 SS. Reliance: Single, folded chart-sized glossy page. Part color, dated 1935. Provides information and itinerary for a 26 day cruise to Scandinavian ports and Russia aboard the SS Reliance. 5.1937 Cruise of the SS Reliance Around the World: Multi-page stapled booklet. Photo-heavy booklet detailing the itinerary, dates of sail, rates of fare and port information for a five month 'round the world cruise to ports in Europe, South and North Asia, the Pacific Islands and western US ports. Cover features illustration of an eroticised culturally non-specific "eastern" woman holding a brazier with her bare hands. Booklet notably features several instances of partial female nudity, not found in other cruise brochures in the collection. Probably included to further the marketing motif of the "exotic Oriental" woman whom potential passengers could infer could be encountered on shore excursions.
