Holland America was established as the Rotterdam- based Dutch-America Steamship Company in 1873. The line's primary clientele then were immigrants to America, taking advantage of the line's transatlantic passenger service to the Port of New York. In 1895 the line offered its first recreational cruise, from the Port of New York to the Holy Land.
The line eventually became known as the Holland-America Line, and moved its headquarters to the United States. In 1983 the line was sold to Carnival Corp., based in Doral, Florida. Currently, the line operates 15 vessels of three different classes. Three vessels make a yearly "Grand Voyage", coming to port on every continent, including Antarctica.Collection
