The Genoa-based, Italia di Navigazione S.p.A., also known as Italia Line or The Italian Line, offered transatlantic passenger service from Italy to the US from the early 1930s to the early 1980s. The line, which was owned by the Italian government, was the result of a merger between Lloyd Triestino, Cosulich and Navigazione Generale d'Italia. It is perhaps best known for its vessel SS Andrea Doria, which was struck and sunk by the Swedish vessel MS Stockholm off of Nantucket, MA in 1956, with the loss of 56 lives. The line ended its passenger operations in the early 1980s due to fiscal hardship caused by general decline in the worldwide cruise industry, and instead began to operate freighters. The line sold its freighters to the d'Amico Societa di Navigazione in 1998.Collection
