Description

Lac Leman #2210; Between Geneva and Montreux, Alps in background; Photo by N.D. Le Bateau a Vapeur translates in English to 'Steam Powered Boat' 'Le Bonivard' is the name of the steamboat in the photo. Lac Leman is another name for Lake Geneva. The photographer made a mistake on the spelling of the steamboat, it is in fact Le Bonivard, not Bonivar. The boat was owned by the Compagnie Generale de Navigation sure le Lac Leman (CGN). It was built in 1868 and used as a ferry boat between Geneva and Montreux until 1925, when the Bonivard caught fire and sunk. Many of the ferry boats used by CGN in the late 19th early 20th century are still being used as ferry boats today. Early 1900's
