Gold painted black lacquered wood, ivory and mother-of-pearl
In rare instances, early carved ivory chess sets had figures in Western form. In this example from the 1700s, the red pieces are executed with Asian dress and facial features while their white counterparts depict Western figures with prominent noses and European attire.
