The Los Angeles Steamship Co, or LASSCO, was founded in 1920 as a passenger ferry service between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1921 the line began to offer service to Hawaii. Two vessels of the same name, the SS City of Honolulu (I and II) both burned, one on its maiden voyage and one in port in Honolulu, which caused major financial hardship for the company, which , in 1931 was sold to Matson Lines, their direct competitor. Matson Lines operated LASSCO as a subsidiary until 1937.Collection
