Matson Lines was founded by William Matson in 1882, and operated out of San Francisco. The line was financed by sugar-tycoon Klaus Spreckels, intially. Spreckels' speculation in Hawaiian sugar led Matson to begin offering passenger cruises from California ports to Hawaii, and select other South-Pacific ports, including New Zealand. The line was the leading, (and for a short time, the only) liner company sailing in Hawaiian waters. In 1970 Matson discontinued their passenger service, and switched to offering global freighter service. The company still operates, and is now headquartered in Oakland, CA.Collection
