Description

Gimbaled stick mercurial barometer / sympiesometer, with brass fittings, a carved rosewood case, and weighted base. The upper barometer is surmounted by an ivorine name plate which has been altered over time. The lower cased sympiesometer is mounted on a silvered plate. The rosewood case is decorated with shell designs. The name of the original maker has been erased through abrasion on the upper ivory plate and in its place the name "Gebbie and Co., Greenock" has been hand written, probably in the late nineteenth century when Gebbie and Co. took over from a previous manufacturer. This is not the oringial maker according to restorer, Rod Cardoza [Jan. 2012]. The date and exact motive for this change is unknown. The original name is only vaguely observable on the back of the ivory plate, and cannot be ascertained with certainty. The lower sympiesometer consists of two parts. On the left is a mercurial thermometer. On the right is a barometer containing almond oil, with hydrogen gas in the upper part of the tube and its reservoir. Used On board the barque "William Dollar".
