Scope and Content

This series consists of thirteen folders: Messageries Maritimes began as the state-owned imperial steamship company operating between France and the Levant in 1835. The company began offering passenger service with the end of French monarchy in the 1870s, sailing to various European, Mediterranean and Asian ports. Many of the service's vessels were taken for use by allied forces during WWII, and consequently, the size of the fleet was greatly decreased. The line's remaining ships ceased operations in the late 1960s as its ships were gradually sold to different steamer companies.
