Model of a gaff-rigged cutter

Name/Title

Model of a gaff-rigged cutter

Entry/Object ID

1992.130.001

Description

This is the oldest surviving ship model made in San Diego. Built in 1880 by Captain Chris Ohre, it was entered in a model yacht race across the channel from 5th Avenue to Coronado in the late 1880s. Of the three models in the race, this was the winner. The sails are not original: two headsails, one mainsail, one topsail. White hull above the waterline. Deck planked and varnished. The model was received with a broken bowsprit, and two crudely modeled sailor figures.
