This series consists of eleven folders:
Norddeutscher Lloyd, or North German Lloyd, was founded in 1857 in Bremen, by Eduard Crusemann and Hermann Heinrich Meier. The line offered cargo and passenger service between the Bremen area and England, and transalantic services to North and South America via Bremerhaven. The line also plied other routes to Asian, Mediterranean and African ports. The line survived intense competition with other cruise industry giants, including the White Star Line, Cunard and the Red Star Line, many of which were being purchased and consolidated into monopolies by American Rail and Steel Tycoons.
Norddeutscher Lloyd suffered the loss of most of its fleet after WWII, as its vessels were awarded to Allies as war reparations. The line continued to operate small passenger and cargo ships until 1970, when, because of the post-war weakness of German currency, and because of low demand for their services, Norddeutscher Lloyd found it in their best interest to merge with the Hamburg American Line, (HAPAG) to become HAPAG-Lloyd.Collection
