The Norwegian American Line was founded in 1910 as, primarily, a freighter service between Norway and the USA. Around the dawn of the first World War, the company transitioned to providing transatlantic passenger transport service between Scandinavia and America, in step with a rise in Scandinavian immigration to the USA. After immigration restrictions were imposed, in the US, in the 1920s, the line started to focus primarily on offering pleasure cruisisng and cargo shipping. The line ceased its transatlantic cruises in the mid 1970s due to financial infeasibility, yet it continued to offer pleasure cruises and cargo shipping until the company dissolved in 1995.Collection
