The NS Savannah is a nuclear-powered cargo-passenger ship which was built from 1955-1958 under Dwight Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" Initiative. The Savannah, named for the SS Savannah, was constructed as a joint project of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Maritime Administration and the Department of Commerce. She operated from 1965-1971 under lease to the American Export-Isbrandtson Lines.
During her service, although only intended to showcase possibilities in nuclear technology, offered luxury-yacht-type service to passengers, and proficient export shipping.
The vessel was decomissioned in the late 1970s and was acquired by South Carolina's Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum in 1981, where she was briefly displayed as a museum ship. In April of 2006, the Savannah was towed to Newport News' Pier 23 for mold, radioactives and paint removal, and refurbishment. As of 2011, it is intended that the NS Savannah will become again, a Federally-funded museum-boat after her refurbishment.Collection
