Scope and Content

This series consists of three folders: The Netherlands-based Oranje Lijn, first known as Maatschappij Zeetransport, was founded in 1937 to transport fruit and nuts between North Africa and Northwestern Europe, began operating between Europe and Canadian ports in 1948. After US and Canadian ports in the Great Lakes enlarged their piers to accommodate the line's vessels, Oranje Lijn began to offer transatlantic service to Great Lakes ports as well. The line was purchased by KPM, another Dutch shipping corporation, in 1959 and KPM's assets were liquidated in 1970.
