The Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Line, or the P&O Lines, was founded in 1822 in London by Brodie McGhie Wilcox and Arthur Anderson to operate between England, Spain and Portugal. The company acquired the crown's permission to deliver royal mail to the Iberian Peninsula in 1840.
The line offered passenger service aboard its mailships, until it began to offer devoted passenger cruises, to locales in Europe, America, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia, in the earliest years of the twentieth century.
P&O Lines still operates passenger and freighter vessels worldwide (as of 2011)Collection
