Scope and Content

This folder consists of thirteen items: 1. Posh: Multi-page, color booklet, dated Spring, 1961. Periodical of the P&O Lines, features articles: about the vessel Oriana, about women's swimwear, and a photo-feature article about "The Women of Japan", which offers social commentary on the traditional and current "roles" of women in Japan. Back page features "British Humor". 2. Posh: Multi-page, color booklet, dated summer 1961. Periodical of the P&O Lines, features articles: about Trinidad, about the vessel Canberra, about the "Tiger Balm Gardens" in China, and an article entitled "Dear George at Sea". The latter article is formatted as a (real?) letter from a director at "Harmony Pictures", sailing aboard the Orsova, which exults both the P&O Cruise experience and the women of Asia, (whom he has encountered because of his P&O Cruise). By modern standards the text of the "letter" is mysogynistic, racist and even vulgar. Perhaps P&O marketers were trying to appeal to playboy bachelors or sex-tourists with this inclusion. 3. Posh: Multi-page, color booklet, dated fall, 1961. Features aritcles about: the Maoris, the debut of the Canberra, a child's-eye chronicle of the cruise experience, and the Australian Outback. 4.Posh: Multi-page, color booklet, dated fall 1964. Features articles about: tugboats, time-measuring instruments aboard the vessels of the fleet, the "Red Center" of Australia, Curry, and about the history of the term "Posh", which P&O claims originated aboard its own vessels in the nineteenth century. Rear page of booklet features a photo-identification guide to nautical uniform insignia. 5. Be Sure of the Sun in 1965 on a Cruise With P&O Orient Lines, Sailings from England- April through September, 1965: Multi-page, color booklet providing a pictorial overview of the cruising lifestyle aboard P&O vessels. Provides rates of fare and sailing dates for cruises by destination for the 1965 cruising season. 6. A Hundred and Twenty-Five Year History of the P&O Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, 1837-1962: Single page, vellum, folded and originally stapled into Spring 1962 "Posh" periodical. Chronicles the history of the P&O Company. Features prints of historical engravings for the Company. 7. P&O Ports of Call, San Francisco, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company: Single-page, folded, booklet, dated 1959. Features map of San Francisco with information about points of interest there, and general information for tourists. 8. P&O Ports of Call, Los Angeles: Single-page, folded booklet, dated 1959. Features photos of vessel interiors for vessels Strathnaver, Strathaird, Mongolia and Moldavia. 11. Orient and Pacific Lines, Ships and Services: Multi-page, part color, stapled booklet, dated 1958. Overview of the cruising experience and lifestyle aboard the fleet of the P&O Lines Co. Features many photos of accommodations, amenities, shipboard activities and services and ports of call. 12. Orcades, Oronsay, Orsova, Fully Air-Conditioned and Stabilized, Tourist Class: Single page folded, bicolor brochure. Undated, ca. 1950s. Provides interior photos of sister vessels Orcades, Oronsay and Orsova. 13. "Oronsay Cruise": Multiple typed pages, stapled. Dated Sunday July 23, (1960s?) Personal account of a cruise experience aboard the Oronsay. First pages provide passenger's description of the vessel, and some history about the vessel. Subsequent pages journal the passenger's daily activities and observations aboard the vessel. Very comprehensive in noting observations, for example, noted the song that the ladies' jewelry-storage music-box in his stateroom played. Hand noted "Willis", and "1972" on front page.
